"Sorrows of the Seminoles"
Engraving, 19th-c., Florida Photographic Collection.
In July of 1842, John Horse and his young wife Susan sailed with a
contingent of Seminole Indians from Tampa Bay to New Orleans, en route to the Indian
Territory in present-day Oklahoma. Out west, they joined 500 African American
refugees who, despite U.S. Army
promises, soon faced perilous circumstances.
