Comanche War Party on the March
Oil painting by George Catlin, 1846–48, Smithsonian American Art
Museum.
Known in Mexico as los mascogos, the Black Seminoles became
famous border guards, joining Seminole Indians to defend
Northern Mexico from frontier Indians, mainly Comanches
and Apaches. It was a hard life, complicated by
American slavers, who continued to pursue the maroons in Mexico.
