"A Rebel Negroe Arm'd and on his guard," 1794 engraving by
Francesco Bartolozzi, after a watercolor by J.G. Stedman, for Stedman's Narrative
of a Five Years Expedition Against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam (1796).
This hand-tinted version comes from Bakker et al's Geschiedenis Van Suriname.
Stedman engaged a number of leading artists for his monumental work on the
maroon war of Surinam, among them Bartolozzi and William Blake.
