U.S. Dragoons in Indian Territory
Painting by Catlin, 1834-1835, Smithsonian.
During the difficult times out west, U.S. officers and Black Seminoles forged a
fascinating partnership, as the black rebels sought army protection and
the white officers agreed to
defend them from slave raiders. For the blacks, freedom
was at stake -- for the officers, justice, order, and honor.
