Entrance to Fort Marion
Photograph by Cooley, 1861-65, Library of Congress.
Jesup held John Horse, Osceola, and the leading Indian chiefs as prisoners in Fort
Marion, the strongest fort in Florida (known to the Spanish, and known
again today, as el
Castillo de San Marcos). Faced with desperate circumstances,
with their resistance dying, John
Horse and his allies dreamed of the impossible, then
achieved it, staging a daring escape to renew the war.
