The U.S. Army compiled this map in 1838 at the outset of the Second Seminole
War. (The black version on the home page was created from a negative of the original.)
In its sparse detail, the map revealed the Army's limited knowledge of
Florida,
which was a decided advantage for the Seminoles and their
black allies.
